Council workers have walked out on a 24 hour strike this morning over proposals to cut jobs and working conditions.

Union members at Doncaster Council are unhappy with plans to make hundreds more redundancies, cut pay, reduce working hours, remove overtime and cut annual leave.

Outgoing chief executive Rob Vincent told the Free Press earlier this year another 700 staff are set to be culled from the authority. Around 700 workers left the council in the first wave of cuts last year.

The authority must make another £43 million of savings over the next three years following huge cuts in local government funding.

But Jim Board, Doncaster Unison branch secretary, believes these latest cuts are unnecessary.

He said: “For the council now to demand they endure yet more cuts is a step too far.

“This means that thousands of people will be expected to accept unemployment and working longer for less.”
