A talented Doncaster youngster is set to hotfoot it onto the West End stage after being picked to star in one of London’s hottest shows.
Thomas Hazelby will play the title role in award-winning musical Billy Elliot - becoming the fortieth youngster to star as the youngster who leaves behind his gritty northern roots to become a leading ballet dancer.
Ten-year-old Thomas has been picked for the role as the production at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre prepares to celebrate its tenth anniversary in May.
He is the eighty-third boy to perform the role worldwide, including Jamie Bell who played Billy Elliot in the award-winning film.
Thomas, who lives with his mum, dad and sister Maya in Doncaster said: “I would like to thank the fantastic team at Billy Elliot who have supported me and helped me to achieve my dream.”
He started dancing at the age of three at his mum’s dance school, Hazelbiz Performers Academy.
Added the football mad youngster, who supports Manchester United and plays for South Kirby Knights: “The best day of my life was when I was offered the role of Billy Elliot.”
Set in a northern mining town, against the background of the 1984-85 miners’ strike, Billy’s journey takes him out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that inspires his family and whole community and changes his life forever.
Billy Elliot the Musical is the recipient of over 80 awards internationally, including five Oliviers and ten Tony Awards. Earlier this week it was announced that the show has been shortlisted for the 2015 This Morning Audience Award, the only Olivier award voted for by the theatregoing public.
The show has been seen by more than ten million people worldwide and Thomas will alternate the role with a string of other talented children.
