Local bantam weight boxing legend Jamie McDonnell will switch on Doncaster town centre’s Christmas lights at Clock Corner on Thursday, November 14.

The event at Clock Corner runs from 4.30pm until 6.30pm.

It will also feature performances from Cast production ‘Cinderella’.

Members of the cast will be mingling with crowds throughout the event.

Further entertainment will come from the Doncaster Youth Stage band, live band ‘The Darlingtons’ and former X Factor contestants ‘The Opera Guys’.

There will be children’s rides, food outlets, a face painter and balloon modeller, Pepper Pig, Donny Dog and visits by Doncaster Rovers players.

Doncaster Civic Mayor, Eddie Dobbs will also be in attendance, and is urging people to do their festive shopping in the town.

He said: “Doncaster has everything you need for Christmas.

Our historic markets are the best in the north of England and have everything you need for from turkeys to seafood, pies and cheeses, fresh fruit and vegetables, cards, presents – even wrapping paper.

We also have the fantastic modern Frenchgate centre featuring big name brands and a bustling high street full of unique shops.
There are plenty of cafés, bars and restaurants for those wanting to make a day of it. I would also urge local residents to buy local and support local businesses.”

A Visit England report last year highlighted how Doncaster now gets more day visitors than Blackpool, Cambridge or Bath.

According to Welcome to Yorkshire, tourism is worth £400m a year to Doncaster.

Doncaster markets were named ‘Britain’s best’ in 2011 and ‘Britain’s favourite’ in 2012.
