A DOG has died after falling through frozen water in Doncaster.

Firefighters from the Technical Rescue Unit were called to Cusworth Hall following reports a Springer Spaniel fell through the iced lake.

They tried to rescue the dog using a sled but the spaniel had already died at around 5pm yesterday.

Just three days ago firefighters were also called out to save a Staffordshire Bull Terrier which managed to scramble to an island in the middle of a pond in Cantley when the ice began to give way.

With further cold weather expected next week in the borough, dog owners are being warned by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to keep their pets away from frozen water.
