A dedicated volunteer for a veterinary charity has been nominated for a top award in recognition of her outstanding passion and commitment.
Ann Jones, 75, a volunteer at the PDSA shop in Mexborough High Street, is up against two other hopefuls in the coveted ‘Retail Volunteer of the Year’ category at the charity’s annual awards.
The grandmother, of Ferryboat Lane, Mexborough, has been volunteering for PDSA for more than 10 years to help raise funds for sick and injured pets in the area.
She said: “I was really surprised to be put forward for the award but I am absolutely delighted.
“Volunteering differed to what I first imagined and is a lot more of a challenge. I also surprised myself by how much I get involved and how determined I am for the shop to do well. I get very passionate about my role as a volunteer, and get excited when we make a big sale.
“To anyone thinking about volunteering I would say go for it! It’s the best thing I ever did. My top tips would be to keep an open-mind, be willing to learn new things and be adaptable.”
Store manager Laura Coult, who nominated Ann for the award, said: “Ann has a great sense of humour and as she has been with us for 10 years she knows a lot of our regular customers very well.
“Ann gets on with people from all walks of life and will always go out of her way to ensure she gets that sale. Ann embraces change and is always willing to try something new.”
The PDSA Volunteer Awards are now in their eleventh year.
The award winners will be announced in the New Year.
