Twinkle-toed Rachael Orford has followed in the foosteps of 80s movie Flashdance by building a new career in construction.
The 18-year-old jazz and contemporary dancer has taken on an apprenticeship with Keepmoat in Doncaster.
And Rachael who is keen to make her mark in a male dominated industry is hoping that her enthusiasm and flare will help her impress in her new role at Keepmoat’s onsite office at its Yew Gardens development in Edlington.
Balby-born Rachael is now working alongside Site Manager Eliot Goodwin as she learns about the day-to-day running of a building site and office administration as part of her apprenticeship.
“Working at Keepmoat is certainly different from my training as a dancer, but I am loving every minute,” says Rachael, who gained a grade C in her A-Level dance class.
Working on the 387 home development, Rachael is responsible for running the site office and ordering materials to ensure construction work can be carried out on time.
Just like Alex from the 1980s movie Flashdance, Rachael works in a man’s world but that’s not something that bothers her.
“I would love to teach some of the site team my dance moves.
“I am sure I will win them round soon, we may even have to set up a dance class after we’ve finished on site for the day.”
The busy teenager is also busy studying for a Level 2 in Business Administration NVQ Diploma at learning and training provider, LifeSkills Rotherham.
“I’m really enjoying working for Keepmoat.
“It’s great learning the basis of a career which will see me through life.”
Eliot Goodman, Keepmoat Site Manager at the site off Broomhouse Lane, said: “Rachael is very enthusiastic and quite a livewire. I’m sure she’ll shimmy her way to success.”
Spencer Fearn, Managing Director from LifeSkills, said: “It is pleasing to see how well Rachael is progressing, she works extremely hard and has fantastic support from her employer. She certainly has a bright future ahead.”
The Yew Gardens Keepmoat project, consisting of 387 new homes, is a mix of two bedroom and three bedroom semi, mews, apartment and detached properties.
