A pensioner accused of murdering his wife and daughter appeared before a court in Rotherham for the first time yesterday.

Peter Redfern, 70, spoke only to confirm his name and address during a brief hearing at Rotherham Magistrates’ Court where he was charged with two counts of murder.

The bodies of his wife, 67-year-old Jean Redfern, and their daughter, Sarah Redfern, 33, were discovered at their bungalow in Sandygate, Wath-upon-Dearne, at 7pm on Monday.

South Yorkshire Police revealed yesterday that post-mortem results showed that Jean Redfern suffered asphyxiation and Sarah Redfern died from severe head injuries.

Miss Redfern, who was described by neighbours as a “beautiful young woman”, worked at the Bon Marche clothing store in nearby Rotherham.

Peter Redfern, who is believed to be a gas fitter, was remanded in custody by magistrates.

He will appear before Sheffield Crown Court next week.
