This is the scene of destruction following the latest cash machine raid in South Yorkshire - the latest in a long line of attacks in the region.

The Spar store in Tickhill, Doncaster, was targeted overnight by a gang who used a digger to rip the cash machine containing thousands of pounds from the wall.

The attack comes 24 hours after a similar incident in Stainforth and follows on from a series of other similar raids across the region in recent months.
Workers were at the shop in Northgate repairing the damage to the front of the building this morning.

The store, which also doubles up as the town’s post office, was still open for business following the attack at around 2.50am.

South Yorkshire Police believe that a group of men used a forklift type vehicle to remove a cash machine from the wall of the shop before the suspects made off from the scene in two separate vehicles, a Nissan Navara and Ford Focus.

A significant number of police resources were directed to the scene and pursued the vehicles.

It is reported that one of the suspects in the Focus threatened officers with violence during the pursuit, but no injuries have been reported.

The Nissan Navara, believed to have been stolen in an earlier incident, has since been recovered at the White Towers caravan site in Armthorpe Road, Doncaster, along with the ATM.

No arrests have yet been made.

Extensive enquiries are now underway at the scene and across Doncaster.

A number of similar thefts have occurred across South Yorkshire and in neighbouring force areas in recent months and detectives are working together to establish any patterns or connections.

Anyone with information about the incident, or who may hold information about the identity of the suspects, is encouraged to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 55 of 17 March 2015.

Alternatively, people can report information in confidence to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

One shopper, Maragaret Hill, of Tickhill said: “Its disgusting isn’t it? What’s going on?

“It is normally such a quiet place so its such a shock when you come down to the shops and find something like this has happened.”

In recent weeks, cash machines have also been stolen or attacked in Hatfield, Crowle, Epworth, Blyth, Gainsborough, Harthill in Worksop, Misterton and South Cave.

Police have previously said they believe all the incidents are linked.

It comes as detectives investigate the theft of an ATM from McColl’s newsagents in Thorne Road, Stainforth, which is reported to have taken place at around 3.50am on Monday.

A forklift-type vehicle was used to remove the cash machine from the wall of a building in Thorne Road, before being loaded onto a silver pick-up vehicle, which was driven off in the direction of Field Road.
