A LORRY driver underwent surgery yesterday after being attacked by a gang of men trying to steal fuel from his truck parked in South Yorkshire.

The 38-year-old Romanian was still unconscious last night due to head injuries he sustained when he was run over in a field near the A1 at Robin Hood’s Well, near Burghwallis.

The shocking attack happened between 10pm and 11pm on Sunday after the driver had parked up for an overnight stay in a layby on the northbound carriageway of the A1.

His articulated lorry with attached 44-tonne trailer had the word Bananan in yellow written along it.

The driver became aware of four men trying to siphon diesel from his fuel tank and confronted them.

Doncaster police say he chased the group away and over into the adjacent fields, where they ran to a parked car, believed to be similar to a 4x4 vehicle, and got inside.

The car driver then proceeded to drive towards the trucker as he ran back towards his lorry.

He was run over and, while on the ground, was assaulted further by the four men who got out of their vehicle.

The man sustained significant injuries including a collapsed lung and suspected broken ribs and is currently in hospital in a serious condition.

Det Insp Dave Mayfield, of Doncaster CID, said: “This is a particularly nasty incident that has left the victim in a very serious condition.

“I think he has done his best to intervene but has been outnumbered and they have retaliated.

“The vehicle the group got into is believed to have had a broken rear window.

“If anyone has seen a vehicle of this description, has any further information, or may have witnessed the incident, I would urge them to please come forward to assist in finding the men responsible for this attack.”
