The incident happened at around midday on Tuesday, December 1 at the Troy Cafe, High Street.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “A 53-year-old man has been detained following a reported assault at a Doncaster town centre café.

“At around midday on Tuesday 1 December, police were called to a café in High Street, Doncaster, following reports a man had assaulted a number of men inside the premises.

“Three men suffered minor injuries during the incident. A 53-year-old man was detained by officers and sectioned under the Mental Health Act. An investigation is now underway.”

The owner of Troy Cafe, Haydar Dirik, confirmed that the incident happened and reassured customers.

“I have been in business for ten years and nothing like this has ever happened before. It was a racial attack, it was not an attack against the cafe. This could have happened anywhere. The cafe is still a safe place to come.”
