South Yorkshire police chief explains why he ordered inspection of county’s police force

South Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner has stressed that he wants the ‘full extent’ of child sexual exploitation in the county to be ‘uncovered’.

Dr Alan Billings spoke about the issue at a meeting of the Unite union in Doncaster, where he answered questions from members about policing in the county and explained why he had commissioned an inspection of the police force to understand how child sex abuse used to be dealt with by officers and what happens now.

He said: “I am commissioning an inspection of the whole force area so that I can be sure that we understand the full extent of this in Doncaster, Sheffield and Barnsley as well as Rotherham.”
