SOUTH Yorkshire Police are reminding residents across the Dearne Valley not to leave their doors and windows unlocked and risk becoming a victim of a ‘sneak-in’ burglary.

The force warn that if windows and doors are left unlocked, criminals on the lookout for an easy opportunity can slip in and out of people’s homes, taking valuables and personal possessions.

Detective Sergeant Wayne Parkinson said: “A third of all home burglaries in Doncaster are down to properties being insecure and could be prevented.

“It only takes a few seconds for thieves to get into a property and take valuable items if windows and doors are left insecure.

“We are doing everything we can to stop burglaries from happening in Doncaster, but we need the publics help.

“Always keep keys and valuables out of sight, and even if you are just in the garden ensure that windows and doors are not left open.”

The following tips will help to keep homes and valuables safe:-

*Keep doors and windows locked – even if you are only in the garden or outside the house

*Put keys out of sight and reach from windows and doors – don’t leave keys in doors where they could be grabbed through the letterbox

*Remove valuables from sight – Don’t leave any valuables on show near windows and doors

*Keep vehicles locked at all times – even when on your drive or in the garage

*Keep garages and sheds locked at all times

*If you see anything suspicious, like people looking around houses or going up and down driveways always report it to the police immediately

*Not sure? Don’t open the door. Always ask to see ID of people calling at your home and check with their company before allowing them in.
