Police have visited the homes of five people suspected of buying malware - malicious sotftware for computers - in a crackdown on cyber crime.

Officers, working with the National Crime Agency and the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Cyber Crime Unit, visited two homes in Sheffield, two in Barnsley and one in Rotherham.

They advised them of the consequences of being prosecuted for cyber crime, including up to 10 years in prison.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Singleton said: “The visits formed part of the week of action, which involved both enforcement and awareness raising.

“The enforcement side was intelligence led and aimed at preventing those who had purchased such software from falling foul of the law.”
