The jury in the trial of a former Rotherham mayor accused of carrying out a historic sexual assault on a 13-year-old girl have been discharged.
Recorder Jonathan Bennett discharged the jury in the trial of Barry Dodson at Sheffield Crown Court this morning.
He said it had been brought to the court's attention today that one juror had an 'important family commitment' over two days later this week.
Recorder Bennett said attempts to reschedule the case, which had been due to finish on Friday, around the juror's commitments had failed.
He told the jury: "In the circumstances, I don't think I have any choice but to discharge you."
The trial is to be reopened this afternoon with a new jury sworn in.
Dodson, 67, of Cranworth Road, East Dene, denies one charge of indecent assault on a 13-year-old girl that is said to have happened in the summer of 1987.
