THE lorry driver who was mown down by a car while tackling fuel thieves could be in hospital for some time, say police.
Relatives of the 38-year-old man are travelling from Romania to visit him in Doncaster Royal Infirmary.
Meanwhile, detectives are keen to trace what is thought to be a Nissan 4X4 vehicle with a damaged rear window which was driven over the victim in a field off the A1 at Robin Hood’s Well, near Burghwallis, last Sunday night.
The trucker had caught a gang of four men trying to steal diesel from his lorry while the articulated lorry was parked in a layby. When he chased after them they got into the off-roader and drove over him twice as well as assaulting him.
“He is still serious but stable and is going to be out of action for several months because of the multiple injuries he suffered,” said Det Insp Dave Mayfield, of Doncaster CID.
The victim managed to smash the rear window of the dark coloured Nissan and officers want to hear from anyone who may have seen such a vehicle or repaired the window.
They have circulated descriptions to other forces in the hope of tracing the vehicle and the four men in it.
