A 26-year-old man who launched a September ‘night of terror’, repeatedly raping a teenager and attacking two other women, has been jailed for life.

The assaults by Nicholas Totty, of Newman Road, Rotherham, were labelled “the most grotesque and hideous of crimes” by Detective Superintendent Lisa Ray, after he was sentenced today (December 17) at Sheffield Crown Court.

She continued: “It is difficult to find the words to truly describe the gravity of Totty’s actions and the lifechanging impact on all the victims he attacked during that night of terror.

“The victims in the case have showed incredibly bravery and dignity throughout the course of the investigation and subsequent court proceedings. I hope the fact that Totty is now off the streets and facing life in jail will help give them some closure.”

Totty had admitted four counts of rape, wounding with intent, assault with intent to commit a sexual offence and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm at an earlier hearing.

The court heard how he had first tried to attack a 24-year-old woman walking her dog in Herringthorpe Valley Road, Rotherham, at about 9.15pm on September 27.

About two hours later he targeted a 27-year-old woman in Moorgate, Rotherham – hitting her over the head with a torch before sexually assaulting her. He dragged the victim along the street, but ran off after a member of the public intervened.

At about 1am the next day, he forced his way into a property and seriously assaulted a 45-year-old woman and a 17-year-old girl. He repeatedly raped the teenager before fleeing.

Members of the public responded well to a police appeal for information, and detectives were able to link Totty to the crimes by using forensic evidence.

Supt Ray added: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the public who intervened on the night, preventing further offences, and who came forward with information that helped us to identify Totty.”
