The opening of an inquest into the tragic Christmas Day death of a two year old toddler from the Dearne Valley has been carried out.

Tommi Jeorge Reynolds, of Marran Avenue, Darfield, died in the car park of Montagu Hospital in Mexborough after his parents made an emergency dash there when he became ill and found it closed.

The tot’s angry mum, Michaela Reynolds, confirmed she had taken son Tommi to the hospital.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said police were called on December 25 following reports that a two-year-old boy had died at a hospital in Doncaster. He added that there were not thought to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the child’s death and it was now in the hands of the coroner.

At the time of the death a spokeswoman for Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals was quick to react to news of the tragedy and said they were saddened to hear of the child’s death and added: “Our Minor Injuries Unit is not equipped to deal with patients who are critically ill and the unit was closed on Christmas Day, as it has been for three years.

“We work with health care services across Doncaster to sign post people to the right services depending on their condition, and on this occasion the most appropriate action was to call 999.”

Barnsley coroner’s officer, David Pendriss, said the death of the youngster had been confirmed at Doncaster Royal Infirmary on Christmas Day. He also said a post mortem had been carried out at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and had proved inconclusive and added: “The case has been adjourned for further inquiries and reports. No date has been set for the full inquest.”
