A suspicious Neighbourhood Watch member sniffed out a group of youths with a bag of cannabis during a community meeting in Doncaster.

The volunteer was attending a meeting at a community base in Derwent Road, Mexborough, when they reported a ‘funny smell in an alleyway’ to police officers in attendance.

PC Janine Kelly and PCSO Annette Flavell found three 15-year-old boys smoking cannabis in a nearby alleyway, and handed all three cautions.

Weeks earlier, police followed information from another Neighbourhood Watch member and discovered a strong smell of what was believed to be cannabis in Taunton Gardens, Mexborough.

Officers searched a property the next day and found what is thought to be a cannabis set-up.

They seized eight mature plants and arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of cannabis cultivation.

He is currently on police bail pending further inquiries.

Inspector Ray Mountford said: “Neighbourhood Watch is becoming more and more integral in partnership working.

“It is an invaluable service, whose members provide a great deal of information resulting in warrants, arrests and money seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.”
