A DONCASTER MP is calling for the laws governing scrap metal dealers to be changed after a spate of thefts across the borough.
Rosie Winterton MP for Doncaster Central wants the Government to licence scrap metal dealers and consider banning cash transactions within the trade.
Miss Winterton said: “Metal theft is becoming an epidemic and urgent action is needed to put a stop to these attacks.
“There have been a number of incidents across Doncaster – some have left vulnerable people with no access to phone lines or the internet for days or even weeks at a time.
“The Government should back the police in their fight against metal theft by pledging to change the law to make it easier to stop this organised crime.” Thousands of homes were left without phone lines after cable thieves struck in the borough.
