MORE than 20 firefighters were called to tackle a blaze and gas explosion at a Doncaster caravan site.

Residents were evacuated when three caravans went up in flames at the park in Sutton Road, Askern.

Crews from Askern, Adwick and Doncaster were called to the incident as they looked to prevent the fire spreading to other vehicles and buildings.

Gas cylinders were found on the site, one of which exploded, and the cylinders are being cooled before residents are able to return to their homes.

No one is believed to have been injured in the fire, which started around 6.40pm yesterday.

Fire chiefs said an investigation would be carried out to determine the cause of the fire.

Sutton Road remained closed to traffic this morning.
