A man who set fire to his Doncaster bedroom because he ‘wanted to die’ has been detained in hospital.
Steven Hill, aged 46, left the burning room at a residential home when the smoke became too much for him, Doncaster magistrates were told.
The incident took place while other staff and residents at the care home in The Avenue, Bentley, were enjoying a summer barbecue in the garden.
Prosecutor David Sheppard said they heard the fire alarm going off and when they looked up at the rear windows they could see fire and smoke coming from the defendant’s room.
Hill handed over a cigarette lighter and told staff: “I just wanted to die. I’ll stab myself next time.”
He pleaded guilty to reckless arson, which caused £1,400 of damage, and the court made an order under the Mental Health Act to detain him at a hospital in Lincoln to receive treatment.
