Dearne residents are being targeted by a campaign urging them to report any hate crimes at a centre set up at Mexborough Library.
A hate crime is defined as any offence or behaviour where the victim is targeted because of their gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, race, religion or appearance, and can take the form of physical assault, bullying, harassment and insults.
Anyone in the area who has experienced or witnessed a hate crime is being urged to report it at the hate crime reporting centre at Mexborough Library on John Street, which is open during working hours.
Coun Glyn Jones, Doncaster Council cabinet member for equalities said: “Hate crime is traditionally under-reported, and many people may have been a victim, and not even realised. We want to let people know this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated and that action will be taken.” Superintendent Eddie Murphy said: “The crime reporting centres in the area are there to make it easy for people to report incidents of hate crime and access vital help”
