MORE than a thousand women will walk through the night to raise vital funds for Barnsley Hospice this Saturday (June 23rd).

The ‘Midnight Walk’ will see grans, mums, daughters and friends stepping out together when the clock strikes twelve. Many intrepid fundraisers will be dressed in grass skirts, leis and coconut bras in keeping with the Hawaiian theme of this year’s event.

The fundraiser will start and finish at a fun-packed event site on Grange Lane, Stairfoot, and walkers have chosen to take either a five or ten mile route around Barnsley.

Organiser Helen Macintosh said “Nearly 1200 women have signed up already to take part this year and it is still not too late to join in. Women can just come along on the night any time after 9pm and register there and then.

“It is always a fun event. We also have a few items of Hawaiian merchandise left for sale and they will be available on the night too. We have T-shirts, grass skirts and leis – but have sold out of coconut bras!”

Now in its sixth year, it is hoped the women’s efforts this year, together with those of local supporters and businesses, will help top the £100,000 raised by the event in 2011.

Proceeds will go to the running of the hospice at Gawber, which cares for anyone in Barnsley who has a life-threatening illness, along with their loved ones. Barnsley Hospice has ten beds for inpatient care and provides day care in its Limes Unit as well as a wide range of other services.

It has to find £1.9m on top of its NHS grant of £1.6m every year and relies heavily on volunteers, donations and sales at its nine shops around the borough.
