A DANISH-born councillor has been appointed as Doncaster’s new civic mayor.
Eva Hughes, who moved to the town in 1984, received the mayoral chains in a special ceremony at the Mansion House.
Coun Hughes is the first Wheatley ward member to be elected as civic mayor and replaces previous incumbent Ken Knight.
She said: “It is with pride and gratitude that I accept my nomination to become the first citizen of this historic borough.
“Little did I know when the European Community signed the Maastricht Treaty in 1992 that I would be able to become a councillor in my adopted borough.
“So nine years later to become civic mayor and represent the people of Doncaster free of political bias is one which I will cherish.
“I will fulfill the role to the best of my ability.”
She has chosen Doncaster’s voluntary youth organisations and the Aurora Centre, which aims to improve the quality of life for cancer patients, as the charities to benefit from her year in office.
Coun Chris Mills was appointed as her deputy at the ceremony last Friday.
