Furlong Road Church at Bolton-on-Dearne stages its open weekend with photographs, programmes and anything connected with the 181 years old building that is to close.

The celebration beginning today with a service at 6.30pm will include an open day tomorrow from 10am to 12.30pm when people are invited in to browse and chat. There will be a concert with the Barnburgh Singers in the evening, and on Sunday services will take place at 10.30am and 6pm.

Church member Joyce Kilner said the future plan is to refurbish the adjacent church hall and turn it in to a church.

A cash sum has been loaned by the Circuit for renovations, that will be repaid once the church land has been sold.

Joyce said: “The cost of keeping the church warm and dry is too much and we can’t afford the necessary work.

“We are concentrating now on developing the hall for the future.”
