FIREFIGHTERS were on hand to offer coupons to shoppers in a bid to drive down kitchen fires.

The South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service-run campaign saw crews give out money off tokens for oven chips alongside fire safety advice outside The Co-operative supermarkets in Mexborough, Bessacarr, Armthorpe, Edlington, Bessacarr and Cantley.

The campaign, dubbed Kitchen Nightmares, forms part of the fire service’s latest efforts to reduce cooking related fires, which the brigade say has accounted for half of all the house fires its crews have attended.

Doncaster’s firefighters tackled more than 69 cooking related house fires last year which resulted in 16 injuries, many of which were caused by old fashioned chip pans.

The coupons scheme is to urge shoppers to chuck their old chip pans away.
