VOUCHERS for oven chips are being given away by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to discourage people from using chip pans.
The fire service is visiting the Co-operative in Orchard Street, Mexborough, giving out money off coupons and fire safety advice to mark National Chip Week.
It is using the week to raise awareness of the dangers of chip pans, which still account for 465 fires, 112 injuries and two deaths in South Yorkshire since 2007, according to fire service figures.
Steve Makepeace, head of community safety, said: “It’s perhaps hard to believe in this day and age that people still use chip pans. But our data shows they remain a real and present danger.
“Oven chips or thermostat controlled fryers are much safer, meaning there is no need for people to continue putting their lives at risk.”
Firefighters will be in store on the mornings of February 23 to 25. For more information visit www.syfire.gov.uk
