SOUTH and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have jointly been awarded a £3.6 million government grant to improve control rooms.

The cash was awarded to the two services under the Fire Control systems project which aims to ease the process of getting fire crews despatched more quickly and effectively.

The project aims to develop a new, shared control system for mobilising teams without a need to merge the two control rooms.

It is hoped the new system, which allows calls to be transferred to other emergency services so calls can be picked and mobilised quicker, will be up and running by 2014. It will be over seen in South Yorkshire by the Fire and Rescue Authority.
