Striking Care UK staff are set to present a 750 signature petition to Mayor Ros Jones at today’s cabinet meeting.
Doncaster Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) election agent Steve William will present the petition calling on the Mayor to take the Care UK contract back into council control.
Care UK workers who begin a further two weeks of strike action on Monday 5th May will join the protest lobby beforehand.
This follows the TUSC organised 50 strong protest at Ed Miliband’s Bentley surgery last week.
Jason Fawley, TUSC candidate for Adwick, who’s wife works for Care UK said after his appointment with Mr. Miliband “Mr. Miliband seemed genuinely shocked at how much my wife’s wages are being cut. He said that he did not think that Care UK should have been awarded the contract. I want him to say that publicly and show his support for the strikers which would put pressure on the company to withdraw these drastic wage cuts.”
In the Cabinet meeting Question session on Wednesday, Steve Williams (health worker and TUSC candidate for Conisborough) will ask the mayor what Mr. Miliband said to her and what she is doing to stop Care UK cutting wages of Doncaster workers by 35% and detrimentally affecting the care of vulnerable service users. “I will be asking the mayor to use her powers to take the contract back off Care UK and put it back in the NHS which should not be privatised for profit”.
