Camra beer guide overflowing with local pubs serving the best ale

BEER is booming in South Yorkshire – and there’s proof aplenty in the latest edition of the book that is a bible for the dedicated drinker.

Five Sheffield hostelries are new nominations in the Camra Good Beer Guide 2012, out today – joining the 24 best boozers which are already part of the pub trade’s most coveted club.

South Yorkshire has an impressive 79 pubs featured in the new guide.

And while many pubs are struggling to cope with the recession and the ever rising price of a pint, the guide hails a new golden age for the micro-brewery.

Three new ones have opened in South Yorkshire in the last year alone – Sheffield’s Blue Bee, the Imperial at Mexborough and the Two Roses at Darton, near Barnsley.

The new Sheffield pubs on the Camra roll of honour are Henry’s in the city centre, the Sheffield Tap at the city’s main railway station, the Francis Newton and the York in Broomhill, and the Wortley Arms at Wortley.

Catherine Jennings, assistant manager at the York, said the accolade had come at just the right time as the hostelry was preparing to celebrate its first anniversary since its relaunch as an upmarket gastropub.

She said: “To us great food and great beer go hand in hand. We believe the right beer should be matched with food just like wine.

“This means a lot to us – we take pride in the real ales we offer and how we keep them. We have 10 regular suppliers and we have beers like Farmers Blonde, Abbeydale’s Deception as well as guests like Acorn.

“Being in the Camra guide really puts us on the map.

“We aren’t in the city centre so it’s now more likely people will seek us out as a destination.”

The Sheffield Tap has already won awards for its imaginative makeover of a long disused station waiting room – but assistant manager Phil Briddon said the Camra verdict was very important.

He said: “We’ve been working towards this. It’s a really influential guide, it will bring in lots of visitors from outside Sheffield and we’re hoping it will be very good for trade.

“We’ve currently got 30 beers on draught and 214 in bottles, so there’s plenty for people to go at.”

Mark Simmonite, manager at Henry’s, said the Camra guide was the beer lover’s bible and the nomination had put the former cafe bar firmly on the map.

He said: “We think we offer the best choice of beers in the city centre and we’ve developed a good following since we opened 16 months ago.

“Beer lovers do actively seek out the pubs listed in the guide so this is very important to use.”

Camra’s Yorkshire regional director Mick Moss said pubs were surveyed and rated by their own customers for the guide.

He said: “With so many fantastic community pubs in our area, it is becoming harder every year for Camra branches to select their choice of local pubs to feature in the guide. Only pubs serving a consistently high standard of real ale are considered for inclusion.

In our 40th year, we hope readers find the guide as useful as ever in tracking down the perfect pint of real ale.”
