Wedding gift builds up our appeal funds
NEWLY-WEDS Joanne and Peter Roberts helped celebrate their marriage with a surprise Scan For Life wedding gift.
The fun-loving couple from Wheatley Hills organised a multiple choice quiz to round off proceedings at their Earl of Doncaster reception last month and based it on their own worst habits and darkest secrets.
And they were delighted when guests on the winning table decided to donate their 110 winnings to our latest charity appeal - launched in conjunction with the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust.
"They had the chance to keep the money but decided to give it to the appeal," said 26-year-old Joanne, from Wheatley Hills.
"I didn't expect that but we were all for it. I thought it was a fantastic gesture.
"Peter's mum has had cancer before and we've obviously read about the Free Press Scan For Life appeal.
"I thought it was absolutely brilliant what they did."
However Jackie Snell, a member of the winning team made up of Joanne's former work colleagues from Cedar Special School, later admitted to a certain degree of foul play!
"We actually won it by cheating," joked Jackie, from Kirk Sandall. "But we were always intending to give the money to charity.
"One of the ladies on the table, Gill Cantrell, her husband has had cancer and come through it so she was keen to donate the money to Scan For Life. We were all happy to do that."
Also sat on the winning table were Tammy and Pete Watkin-Duray, Sharon and Colin Topliss, Sue and Ian Lord, Sue and Craig Fulward, Carol and John Coucom and Derek Nice, all from Doncaster.
Joanne and Peter married at St Aidan's Church in Wheatley Hills on July 19 where their two daughters Holly, six, and 16-month-old Hannah were both bridesmaids.
The Free Press launched Scan For Life last month in an effort to raise 600,000 to buy a new super scanner for Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Donations to the appeal can be made by visiting the trust at St John'sHospice shop, 4, East Laith Gate in Doncaster town centre, with cheques made payable to 'Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust'.
Funds may also be paid directly into the campaign account: Co-operative Bank, account number 50326679.
n Park Social Club in Edenthorpe will host a special cabaret night to raise money for Scan For Life next month.
Members of the club will be invited on stage to perform at the Eden Grove Road venue on Saturday, September 6, from 8pm.
Treasurer Peter Cresswell said: "Two of our close friends have died recently from cancer. Things like that just make you more determined.
"We've done things in the past for the charity and we're really committed to it."
