Midnight walkers are honoured at medal ceremony

MIDNIGHT walkers who helped Scan For Life take another step closer to its £600,000 target have received medals at a special ceremony.

More than 350 fundraisers braved the elements at Lakeside last month to complete our inaugural event - and we have already received more than 8,500 in sponsorship money from the night.

Proud volunteers were at the information and advice centre at St John's Hospice in Balby to celebrate their efforts.

Minister for Yorkshire and local MP Rosie Winterton, who handed out the medals, said the Midnight Walk encapsulated the 'spirit of Doncaster'.

"It was a night enjoyed by all and the atmosphere was great," said Miss Winterton, who completed the walk herself.

"I'd like to thank people for giving up their time to help such a worthwhile cause."

Paul Coddington, chair of Doncaster Council, also attended the event after completing the walk.

The civic mayor chose the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust as one of his nominated charities when he took up his new council position earlier this year.

The Free Press launched Scan For Life in July and hopes to raise 600,000 to buy a new state-of-the-art cancer scanner for DRI.

Doctors say the new equipment will help improve the detection and treatment of cancer by reducing waiting times and producing clearer images.

n Our first-ever Midnight Walk proved to be a huge success - and the Free Press has already fixed a date for a similar event next year.

The 2009 Midnight Walk will be held on October 16 and we hope the night will be even bigger and better. See you there!
