Lions back our scanner appeal

A LONG-RUNNING charity has pledged to donate the lion's share of its 2009 proceeds to Scan For Life.

Tickhill and District Lions has vowed to support our ongoing appeal to raise 600,000 for a new super scanner for Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

The group has already pencilled in a sportsman's dinner, "Steam Up" - a showcase of classic steam engines - and a race night for the next few months - with several more fundraising events in the pipeline.

And not only that, but Lions volunteers have guaranteed to donate 5,000 from the charity's account at the end of June - regardless of how much money they raise before then.

Mike Gleadall, a member of the Lions for more than 30 years, said: "We're here to support the people of Tickhill and the whole borough and what better way to do it than through the scanner appeal.

"Everybody's lives are touched by cancer at some point.

"The Free Press is doing a good thing and it really appealed to us at the Lions.

"The target of 600,000 is a lot of money but every little helps."

Tickhill and District Lions is part of Lions Club International - which claims to be the largest voluntary organisation in the world with 1.3 million members in 202 countries. The organisation is committed to raising money for community projects across the globe.

It has previously helped raise money for St John's Hospice in Balby which provides specialist end-of-life care for cancer patients.

Scan For Life was launched in July last year in conjunction with Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust to raise money for a new 64-slice scanner that will revolutionise the treatment and detection of cancer across the borough.

Our running total currently stands at more than 200,000.

Check your Free Press for more details about the Lions' Scan For Life schedule.
