Enjoy a dress down day for our appeal

DRESS down and feel uplifted. That's the message from everyone at the Free Press as we kick-start Scan For Life for 2009.

The New Year may have started under a cloud of depression - dominated by the economic downturn - but we want Doncaster to put its worries to one side for a fun-filled Friday of fundraising and help the borough beat cancer.

The Free Press launched its Scan For Life Appeal, in conjunction with Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust, last year to raise 600,000 for a new super scanner for Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

And within five months, thanks to your efforts, we had already topped 200,000.

Now we think the time is right to try to boost our campaign further - and help lift your spirits in the process.

Friday, February 20, has been designated as a dress down day here at the Free Press' Sunny Bar HQ, where employees will be invited to swap office attire for casual wear. And we want as many schools, businesses and organisations in Doncaster to join us by taking part in the fundraiser.

Send us a photograph and you may find you and your colleagues featured in the Free Press next month.

All we ask is that everyone who dresses down donates 1 to Scan For Life.

Free Press editor Graeme Huston said: "Times are tough at the moment with the recession really starting to bite - but this is a chance for the people of Doncaster to show they are a cut above the rest.

"We've held several dress down days in the past and they are a fun and easy way to help what is a very worthwhile cause.

"Scan For Life really captured people's imagination - and showcased people's generosity - in 2008 and I don't see that changing this year as we continue towards our 600,000 target."

The new 64-slice scanner identified by DRI promises to reduce patient waiting times and help detect cancer at an earlier stage - giving patients the best possible chance to beat the disease.

Any organisation interested in taking part in our Scan For Life Dress Down Day should contact campaign reporter Paul Goodwin for publicity on 01302 347260.

n Donations to Scan For Life can be made by visiting the trust at 4 East Laith Gate in Doncaster town centre, with cheques made payable to 'Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust'.

Funds may also be paid directly into the campaign account: Co-operative Bank, account number 50326679.
