Steel firm distances itself from facility closure claims

A steel firm which employs workers in the Dearne has dismissed claims the Government is set to close its research facility.

A national newspaper alleged the Government was considering closing Tata Steel’s Swinden Technology Centre in Rotherham.

Company representatives would not speak about the allegations this week beyond stating it never commented on “rumour and speculation.”

Both Tata and the Government are understood to be puzzled about what sparked the rumour, particularly since the firm has been investing in its research facilities.

The company employs around 200 people at the centre, which recently developed armour plates for military vehicles.
