RETAILERS have reported improved year-on-year sales and an increase in staff on the shop floor.
The findings were revealed in a quarterly trades survey which showed that growth continued for a third consecutive month with around 49% of retailers reporting an increase compared with last year.
But respondents to the survey, published by the Confederation of British Industry, considered volumes to be below normal for the time of year (-15%).
Anna Leach, CBI head of economic analysis, said retailers would be heartened by the encouraging results.
“The increase in employment, along with expectations for improvement in the business situation over the next quarter, point to a welcome boost to the sector,” she said, but added there was some way to go before activity was back to normal.
