A major jobs boost is set for one the Dearne’s communities.

Plans by Asda to build a new supermarket and petrol station at the former Whyte Chemicals site, Denaby Lane, Denaby Main have been granted by Doncaster Council.

The proposal had met with mixed reactions with two objections and two letters of support, one adding that there was a preferable site on Station Road in Mexborough.

The 6,247 square metre site will create a massive 300 jobs, with a further 50 being transferred from the existing Hill Top Road store which will be closed making way for a further business to open up there.

Planning officer Andrew Suddes said: “Denaby is in the top 10 per cent of the most deprived areas in Britain.

“These plans will help claw back trade from the centre of town and help to strengthen the local economy.”

Ward councillor Coun Christine Mills said: “The ward has high deprivation statistics and a high level of unemployment and 300 jobs would have a positive impact.

“There are however concerns of the impact on Conisbrough retailers. It’s a difficult balance.”

Head of UK Property Communication at Asda Doug Wilson said that following a consulation earlier this year, 98 per cent of residents supported the scheme.

“The new store will secure the existing jobs in store, 50 being transferred over, and create over 300 new ones.

“This is about an improved shopping experience for our customers with more choice and a new petrol station,” he said.

“It will have 380 car parking spaces.”

Coun Jonathan Wood said: “I don’t think enough thought has been given to the highways issue – Doncaster Road is very busy there at peak times.

“My heart goes out to those residents in Old Denaby and surrounding villages. It might take 25 or 30 minutes extra to get through to Doncaster Road.”
