A DONCASTER Council apprentice who left school with almost no work experience has recommended the programme as a great alternative to further education.

Matt Windass had no interest in going to university when he left Danum Academy two years ago and wanted to get started in the world of work.

The 21-year-old has praised apprenticeships as a “great way” to combine on-the-job qualifications and gain valuable work experience.

He said: “I would recommend it without hesitation. The team here provide fantastic support and really put the learners first.”

Matt, of Oakhill Road, Wheatley Hills, successfully applied through the council’s website.

He started in the HR strategy and consultancy team and now works as an accredited learning assistant, with a focus on providing IT support.

“I really enjoy working with my team and the various apprentices I now assist. It is pleasing to think that the work our team undertakes contributes to other people’s success,” Matt said.

“The team always offer their support, for which I am very grateful.

“During my time as an apprentice I have attended a number of training sessions. These were always enjoyable and covered a wide range of subjects including communicate with confidence, cultural awareness and alcohol awareness. They allowed me to learn about myself and how to interact with others.”

In 2010, Matt also achieved his NVQ Level 2 in business administration and an advanced certificate in Excel. He is currently working towards his NVQ Level 3 in business administration.

He added: “The next logical progression would to become a qualified assessor and this may be something I work towards in the future. I’m also hoping that the council will extend my contract later this year.”
