COUNCILLORS have pushed ahead with plans for a pilot street market in Mexborough and are urging members of the public to have their say on the move.

A single ‘pop up’ stall will be based in High Street each Monday up until Christmas as part of a wider vision to close the outdoor market and replace it with street stalls.

Councillors are using the pilot to gauge public opinion and they are urging people to attend a public meeting next week.

Coun Sue Phillips said she would like to see more active participation from residents in the consultation.

She told the Times: “We have had a lot of traders at the public meetings but I am disappointed that we have not had more residents.

“It is extremely important that people have their say while we are consulting.”

She added that she would also like to see a business step up to fill the Co-operative supermarket building in Orchard Square, which will close on November 28 with the loss of 35 jobs.

Said Coun Phillips: “It is a big building to be stood empty, it really needs filling.”

The street market plan would free up York Square to become a public square with room for seating, water fountains and a performance area.

It is hoped the scheme can be paid for using a number of funding streams, including £50,000 from the Government’s High Street Innovation Fund and part of a £2.5 million grant from Doncaster Community Arts.

The council’s cabinet is also considering handing Mexborough part of a £1.3 million funding pot to improve the borough’s markets.

Councillors will give updates on the street market project at a public meeting in Mexborough Resource Centre on Thursday, November 29, from 7pm.
