A COMPANY has announced plans to double its workforce by creating 100 new jobs.
Askern UK Ltd has already taken on 24 new recruits and is now planning an ambitious £4 million expansion of its Doncaster headquarters.
It is hoped the new carbon friendly factory will see the firm, which is one of Europe’s leading producers of cable reels and drums, double its current staff to 200.
The firm based in High Street, Askern, received help from the Invest in Doncaster and Aspiration Doncaster business support teams overseen by Doncaster Council.
Mayor Peter Davies visited its site for a first hand look at what Askern UK does.
He said: “I am very supportive of business and always pleased to see Doncaster firms expanding and creating more jobs for local people. I am delighted that our invest in Doncaster and Aspirations Doncaster teams have been able to offer their assistance.”
Askern UK dates back to 1947 when it supplied timber to mines.
Tony Veater became managing director in 2009. The 24 staff which have been taken on in the past year include school leavers, over 50s and long-term unemployed, many of whom live in the area.
Askern UK which also has bases in Fife and County Durham has trebled its turnover in the past four years to £8 million. The firm is now enlisting the help of UK Trade and Investment to expand further, especially in Europe and the Middle East.
It anticipates to export £1 million worth of goods for the financial year ending next month.
