The City Region Business Awards are a chance to showcase our best companies to the world, says the head of Sheffield Chamber.

Executive director Richard Wright said: “It’s a great opportunity to pick out the best. It’s not about comparing towns, but to make sure the best companies we have got in the area go forward and can compete nationally.

President Engineering won a British Chamber of Commerce manufacturing award in Yorkshire and the Humber before winning the national title, he added.

“It’s done them the world of good. They are great people to go forward and sell the region as being good for business.”

The man who was instrumental in bringing the Tour de France to Yorkshire is the guest speaker.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, spearheaded the winning bid to bring Le Grand Départ to the county last year, which boosted the region’s economy by an estimated £130 million.

The passionate Yorkshireman is due to explain how he helped to galvanise the public and private sectors to deliver the world’s most high-profile cycle race at the third annual business awards bash.

In his company biography he is described as a ‘dynamic and motivational leader, with an excellent track record in brand building and managing complex businesses’.

It continues: ‘Since his appointment as chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire in October 2008 he has successfully raised the profile of Yorkshire at a regional, national and international level.’

Mr Verity was named Yorkshire’s Man of the Year, Director of the Year and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Yorkshire and Humber Institute of Directors Awards.

Guests are invited to arrive for a champagne reception from 6.45pm before the evening’s host, comedian Kevin Connelly takes the stage just after 7.30pm.

James Mitchinson, editor of The Star, is due to make a welcome speech before dinner is served.

Mr Verity will speak at about 9.45pm before the rest of the awards are given out.

The event takes the winners of the business awards run by the four chambers in Sheffield City Region and the Derbyshire Times newspaper.
