Free Press Environment Awards winners are crowned

IT was celebrations all round as Doncaster’s inspirational eco-warriors were recognised at the Free Press Environment Awards.
Charitable organisations, community groups, businesses and individuals were honoured for their efforts at the Keepmoat Stadium last night.
The whole room was bursting with pride as people listened to the selfless good work going on in and around the borough to protect the environment as they nervously waited for the winners to be announced.
The calibre of entries was very high once again, maintaining the impressive standard celebrated when we launched the awards in 2011 which saw conservation charity BTCV named overall winner.
This year it was Re-Furnish, which has its head office in Hangthwaite Road, Carcroft, which was the star of the night scooping both the recycling award and overall winner award.
The audience heard how the company not only provide affordable furniture for disadvantaged people and prevent the vast amounts of reusable furniture being buried in landfill, but also engage schools in educational programmes delivering environmental awareness, recycling, packaging, financial awareness and business developments.
Speaking about the second annual Environment Awards, sponsored by Sita, South Yorkshire Newspapers’ editor-in-chief Graeme Huston said: “It was a fantastic evening and it was abundantly clear from listening to the inspirational stories of the nominees how seriously they took environmental issues.
“The judges had a tough time picking out the winners as the calibre of nominees was so high but it was a real pleasure to reward the hard work of these people who dedicate so much of their time to making a difference to their communities and work places.”
