An apprentice who has been described as a ‘role model’ has won the Skills/Apprentice/Training Award.

Tom Matthews beat more than 500 applicants to start work for steel-making company Tata Steel as an electrical apprentice.

He is now in his third year of training.

But it isn’t his first award – he won The Barnsley College Apprentice of the Year Award last year.

In his role Tom has been involved in improvement projects for the business bringing cost savings and quality improvements to the business.

An asset to the company, during other projects Tom recommended better equipment, including items that are easier to maintain and more accurate.

Tom has encouraged others to enter similar training schemes by giving talks at schools and as an active group member for Magnet – a group of apprentices who give insight into their training and encourage others to join similar schemes within the engineering industry.

He is also a STEM ambassador and uses his enthusiasm about engineering to encourage young people to continue to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Tom’s ambition is to become a manager or section engineer within five years and to move to higher management within 15 years.

He has started studying for an engineering degree at Sheffield Hallam University to help him achieve this.
