From cutlery to cars, the winner of the Manufacturing Award is Pryor Marking Technology, which has transformed itself into frontrunner of manufacturing technology.

Pryor’s growth, from making hand-cut punches for cutlery makers to creating robotic production-line systems imprinting machine-readable data, is a result of cutting edge innovation.

Last year was the most successful and profitable year in its history - the company has developed new methods of applying marks, such as dot-marking machine-readable bar codes to allow a large amount of data to be stored in a small physical area.

The company has also developed a high-speed laser system providing greater complexity of marks and greater tooling wear, which won contracts for the company.

It has also added advanced software, automation and machine-vision systems to its offering. This breadth of technology allows Pryor to deliver end-to-end, fully automated traceability solutions for the most advanced manufacturing supply chains, and has led to multiple orders to supply automotive production plants in the UK and China.

It dramatically contributed to the company’s 26 per cent increase in turnover to £9.3 million in 2014.

Pryor is involved in local business through the ‘Made in Sheffield’ manufacturers’ group.
