Bus corridor work 'will cost us £15m'
A BUSINESS says it will lose tens of thousands of pounds in trade because of ongoing work to create a £15million bus route in Doncaster.
Bosses at John Peters furniture store claim customers are being put off from visiting the York Road store because of traffic delays caused by the creation of the A638 quality bus corridor.
The QBC is part of a 15.3million scheme to create a cross borough bus lane along the A638 from Rossington Bridge to Woodlands.
An inbound bus lane is being built along York Road between its junction with Jossey Lane and St Mary's Gyratory as part of the project.
John Peters recently started relocating its head office to Doncaster from Leeds which could create at least ten jobs.
James Bartle, joint owner of John Peters, said customers were deciding not to visit the store because congestion was adding 20 to 30 minutes to their journey.
Mr Bartle said he wanted lane restrictions to be lifted to ease congestion at weekends when no work was carried out on the QBC.
He said: "We are suffering at the moment due to the roadworks on York Road which are affecting the footfall.
"There is no reason for the lanes to be bollarded off at the weekend when no work is taking place.
"The road works are a nightmare and are definitely hurting us. I have heard it is hurting the whole area around there.
"We are definitely 20 to 30 per cent down and it is going to cost us tens of thousands of pounds."
The QBC is a joint project between South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, Doncaster Council and the borough's bus operators.
It extends both north and south of the town centre, along York Road, from Green Lane to the North Bridge, and in the south along Bawtry Road from Racecourse Roundabout to Parrots Corner.
As part of the scheme, due to be completed next year, two park and ride sites will be built at Parrots Corner and Woodlands.
John Peters started its head office relocation to Doncaster after its showroom and previous base in Leeds closed.
Alterations are being made to the York Road site to accommodate the firm's administration and accounts department.
John Peters also has stores in Bradford, York, Wakefield and Guiseley.
A spokseman for the QBC partnership said: "We are going to send out someone to visit the businesses to see if there is any customer information we can give them and to see if the signage can be improved."
