New jobs are to be created by the imminent redevelopment of an ‘eyesore’ shopping centre in the centre of Rawmarsh.
A new Tesco supermarket, along with outlets held by Heron Foods, Staniforth Bakers and Vantage Chemist will all feature at the new Bellows Road Shopping Centre this year.
Rotherham Council and Caddick Developments have struck an agreement and work begins next month on the five new shops across 8,500 square feet.
A residential development is also still planned for a later date.
Building work is set to be completed by the end of October, with new facilities open and functioning before Christmas.
The centre was first built in the 1960s. In 2009 Rotherham Council took it by compulsory purchase and since then a number of tenants have moved out.
Local Councillor Neil Hamilton said the centre will “realise ambition for bringing new and sustainable retail shopping to Rawmarsh.”
An original scheme for 59 residential properties fell through when the homes’ developer went bust.
A new electricity sub-station is still under negotiation.
