A Barnsley brewer has appointed a new worker to help with the day-to-day running of the growing business.
Yvonne Underwood has joined Acorn Brewery in Wombwell as an administrative assistant and will take on responsibility for overseeing health and safety and human resources.
She is also in charge of customs and excise duties on exports of real ale to Italy.
Yvonne has 30 years’ experience working as a pharmacy technician and administrator handling complex UK pharmaceutical regulations and was looking for a new challenge in her career.
Her appointment takes some of the pressure off Acorn Brewery founder Dave Hughes, who is her brother.
She said: “I’ve spent the last 12 years listening to David talking about the business and real ale and it just feels like the right time to get involved.
“I have to admit I am more of a cider drinker myself, although I quite like Acorn’s Old Moor Porter, which has a hint of liquorice.”
Dave added: “It’s brilliant to have Yvonne on board. Her organisational skills, expertise and attention to detail are second to none and having her in the office means I have more time to get back in to my wellingtons and do what I love – which is brewing beer.
“Acorn Brewery is going from strength to strength. We now have 11 staff including a new assistant brewer, and a strong sales team. Yvonne’s expert knowledge of computer systems is really going to allow me to concentrate more on the production side of things.”
The brewery currently delivers beer direct to over 400 pubs and bars and 50 retail outlets including delis and farm shops in the north and midlands.
It also sells into Morrisons, Asda, Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s and started exporting its real ale to Italy last year. Staff recently attended the ‘Barcelona Food and Drink Exhibition’ to court buyers in Spain.
Acorn, which has a turnover of £1.2 million, brews around 30,000 pints of real ale per week – with capacity increasing all the time.
Hand-pulled cask ale accounts for 90 per cent of Acorn’s production and investment over the last couple of years.
