A MAJOR police investigation was launched at Mexborough yesterday, following the alleged discovery of a man’s body.
The area around a property on Auckland Road was cordoned off early yesterday afternoon, along with other nearby areas, including a patch of grassland off Pym Road, where a police officer was still on guard late last night.
Other police officers were posted on Adwick Road where it is believed an arrest may have taken place yesterday evening.
Police have not yet confirmed the dead man’s identity.
Neighbours of the property on Auckland Road and on nearby Princess Road were questioned by police yesterday, but were given no details of the crime other than that a man had died.
One resident said he had been contacted by a former Mexborough resident now living in the Shetland Isles, asking about a murder. Rumours were rife around the town, after police moved in to the area.
A spokeswoman at the Doncaster Coroners’ office said: “Officers are aware there has been a suspicious death at Mexborough.”
