Hundreds of Doncaster council staff have been evacuated from the Civic Offices, which are expected to be closed for the at least the rest of the day due to a power outage.
Fire crews were called to the Civic Offices due to the power surge, and the cause is not yet known.
Council workers have been unable to return to the building, and staff working in non-essential services have been sent home.
A council spokesperson confirmed that all essential services are being maintained, and the council contact centre had been moved to the Colonnades shopping centre.
They added: “There are plans in place to manage this sort of situation, and we are pleased to see that they are working.”
Staff members working in essential services have been relocated to council buildings across the borough.
People trying to contact the council on the main number (01302 736000) this morning have experienced problems getting through due to the power cut, but the number is now operational.
About 1,600 staff are based in the Civic Offices, and it is not yet known when the building will reopen to staff or the public.
Sine FM have also been affected by the power outage due to their anntenna being placed on the top of the Civic Offices, and the station is currently only available via their website.
