Brave runner finishes marathon

A BRAVE runner whose heart stopped beating for 15 MINUTES after suffering a cardiac failure has completed the London Marathon in his fastest ever time.

Sean Rodgers, 43, suffered a cardiac arrest in 2009 while in bed after completing a training run and was saved when his wife wife Maria gave him chest compressions.

Sean, of Lynwood Drive, Mexborough, was diagnosed with a rare heart condition, similar to that of footballer Fabrice Muamba, and was fitted with a defibrilator.

But the determined dad-of-two has not let the condition slow him down and he completed the London Marathon on Sunday - one of five endurance challenges he hopes to complete this year.

Sean also finished the race in a personal best time of 4hrs 18mins.

He said: “I did the marathon to try and show people that anything is possible.

“I felt fine during the race, the old ticker didn’t fail me. I was absolutely flying at one stage and I felt I might break the four hour mark.

“But the miles caught up with me in the end. I was over the moon to record a personal best time though.”

Sean completed the race with three friends from the Team Manvers running team which he founded last year.

He raised £350 for the Arrhythmia Alliance, The Heart Rhythm Charity.

Sean has long QT syndrome, a rare heart rhythm disorder that affects one in every 10, 000 people. The condition causes the heart to beat rapidly and then take longer than normal to revert back to a steady rhythm.

He has since been fitted with a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (S-ICD), which re-started his heart when he suffered another cardiac arrest last year.

Following his London Marathon success, Sean will now begin training for the Edinburgh Marathon on May 27.

And his busy schedule will continue when he takes part in a Triathlon in Ripon in July, the Loch Ness Marathon in September, and finally the Round Rotherham Run in October.
